History
The FONTIROU caves date back 30 million years and were discovered by accident in 1905 when an ox pulling a plough put its foot down a hole.

Description
There are 7 chambers carved by water from the grey Agenais limestone and with various types of concretion : stalactites, stalagmites, columns, draperies and eccentrics form expressive, whimsical landscapes of opaque, translucid calcite and aragonite whose colours range from the purest white to a yellowy-orange. The restrained backcloth of the limestone shows off these natural treasures beautifully.

Bone fragments of deer, beaver, reindeer, buffalo, and bear dating back 20,000 years have been found at the FONTIROU caves, as well as the fossilised canine of a sabre-toothed tiger (machaïrodus).

Informal guided tours last about 40 minutes. In summer the cool atmosphere in the caves is refreshing.

This is an all-weather attraction !!!
